Temple de Pythons de Ouidah

A 3-Century Sacred History

Founded under the reign of King Kpasse in the 18th century, the Python Temple is the most sacred sanctuary of the Vodoun cult in Benin.

According to tradition, King Kpasse transformed himself into a python to escape his enemies. Since then, royal pythons have been venerated as protective deities of Ouidah and its inhabitants.

Today, approximately sixty royal pythons live freely within the temple grounds, welcomed and fed by Vodoun priests who ensure their well-being and the perpetuation of ancestral rites.

The Royal Python : Living Deity of Vodoun

Python Royal du Temple de Ouidah
Gardien du Sanctuaire

At the heart of the Temple of Ouidah rests one of the most revered beings in Vodoun religion: the royal python. As the earthly incarnation of the deity Dangbé, this majestic reptile is far more than an animal — it is the spiritual guardian of the city, a messenger between humankind and the invisible forces of the universe.

For centuries, about fifty royal pythons have lived freely within the temple's sacred grounds. Never aggressive, they allow visitors to approach, pet, and even hold them. In Benin, harming one of these snakes is considered a grave sacrilege — a tradition that endures and guarantees their absolute protection.

Encountering a royal python wandering through the streets of Ouidah is an omen of good fortune. Residents gather it respectfully and escort it back to the temple. This unique coexistence between humans and serpents embodies the profound spiritual depth of Vodoun — a living intangible heritage at the very heart of Beninese identity.
