Temple de Pythons
At the heart of the Temple of Ouidah, the Royal Python, incarnate of the animal kingdom, is venerated as the central axis of Vodoun spirituality.
Incarnation of the 4 elements, the deity Dagbé, the majestic royal python is more than an animal — it is the spiritual pledge of the city, the messenger who connects the law of nature and of humans with the invisible forces of the universe.
For centuries, about sixty royal pythons have lived and thrived across generations, freely within the temple's sacred grounds. Never aggressive, they live in coexistence, allowing themselves to be approached, petted and carried by visitors. In Benin, harming one of these snakes is considered a sacrilege — a tradition that guarantees healing energy and blessing in the absolute.
Encountering a royal python wandering through the streets of Ouidah is a sign of blessing. Residents gather it with reverence and carry it back to the temple. This familiar coexistence between humans and pythons illustrates the spiritual depth of Vodoun, a living intangible heritage at the heart of Beninese identity.
